Honorary Fellows

Council has resolved during 2009 that the following persons be designated as Honorary Fellows of Engineers Australia. For each recipient, the supporting text comprises a précis only of the full citations considered by Council.

An Honorary Fellow is, in the opinion of the Council, a person who has rendered conspicuous service to the profession of engineering or is eminent in engineering or an allied science, or is a distinguished person whom the Council desires to honour, either for having rendered conspicuous service to the Australian people or in recognition of outstanding achievement.

Dr Martin Carl Albrecht AC HonFIEAust FTSE

Throughout his career, Martin Albrecht has displayed an extremely high degree of professionalism, and continues to provide an ideal role model and inspiration for engineering practitioners.

His leadership and business skills were well demonstrated during his 15 years as Managing Director of Thiess, transforming it into one of Australia’s largest multidisciplined engineering, construction and mining companies.

He continues to serve in many industry leadership and advisory roles.

Martin has worked closely with the Queensland Division of Engineers Australia in promoting the engineering profession both in business and in the community. He has developed strong relationships with senior Government officials and parliamentarians, where his advice is sought and respected. Martin Albrecht was awarded a Companion in the Order of Australia for services to the construction industry, the engineering profession and the community in 2002. Among his many accolades, he was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2003, and the Premier’s Award for Leadership in Sustainability by EPA Queensland in 2008.

Martin continues to take an active interest in a wide range of Government, community, education and cultural activities.

Sir Roderick Ian Eddington Kt HonFIEAust FRAeS

Sir Rod Eddington is widely known throughout Australia as a leader of industry, not only in engineering but also in his leadership of major companies in the international arena. Sir Rod is well known in international business circles, and has an outstanding reputation for his leadership of major companies operating globally.

From 2000 to 2005, he was CEO of British Airways, resurrecting its fortunes. At the recommendation of the British Government, he was awarded a knighthood in 2005 for his services to civil aviation.

Sir Rod continues to make a substantial contribution to the community more broadly through Chairmanship and membership of many local, national, and international foundations and boards.

He has made major professional contributions to transport planning in both the UK and Australia. His integrity and leadership skills were again evident when undertaking the East-West Link Needs Assessment Study in Melbourne for the Victorian Government.

Sir Rod is now Chairman of Infrastructure Australia with a brief to develop a blueprint for fixing and modernizing the nation’s transport, water, energy and communications infrastructure.

Charles Roland Longworth HonFIEAust FICE FAusIMM

Sandy Longworth is one of Australia’s most respected professional engineers who has devoted his time to advancing and securing our energy and engineering futures.

Sandy helped found the University of Sydney’s Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering. For his huge personal commitment, Sandy was made an Honorary Governor of the Warren Centre in 2006 when he retired from the Board after 24 years service, and was awarded the inaugural Chancellor’s Warren Centre Medal for Outstanding Volunteer Contribution in 2007. He led the National Energy Essay Competition in 2007-2008 for entrants under 30 years of age to describe Australia’s long-term future energy scenarios, and co-authored a submission to the Federal Government’s Energy White Paper 2009. He continues to provide voluntary mentoring services for younger members of the Warren Centre Network.

Throughout his career, Sandy has contributed through office bearer roles in Engineers Australia and related professional bodies.

Sandy Longworth has made many other voluntary contributions in state and community roles over many years, and is currently undertaking pro bono work for the University of Sydney.

William Michael Marley HonFIEAust CPEng FAICD

Mike Marley has made lifelong contributions to the profession, to education, and to the community both nationally and internationally. He has demonstrated major leadership in water engineering and geotechnical engineering fields.

Throughout his career, Mike has taken a leading role in professional engineering associations and especially with Engineers Australia. He has been a strong advocate of the essential role of engineering and the responsibility of engineers in achieving sustainable development and has succeeded in raising the profile of the profession through industry and government networks.

As Chair of the National Engineering Registration Board from 2005 to 2009, Mike publicized the importance of registration of engineering practitioners and international recognition of registered engineers.

Mike made major contributions to the work of engineering faculties at both the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology. He has been instrumental in supporting the work of the Fred Hollows Foundation in PNG and Golder Associates support for RedR. Mike Marley is a highly respected engineer and is a high profile ambassador for the profession and an inspiration to young engineers.
