Incoming President's Statement

photo of doug hargreavesWhat an exciting year we have ahead of us. There are so many initiatives that have just been completed, are underway or are planned for 2010:

  • the new Strategic Plan for 2010-2015 will be activated;
  • the recently-launched Make It So marketing campaign will be a major activity for all of us;
  • we expect our new website to add to the profile of our Institution; and
  • work to update our Royal Charter, the Bye-laws, and our Code of Ethics should come to fruition.

I am excited at being given the opportunity to be your President for 2010 and hope you enjoy the year and gain benefit from what we have ahead of us.

We have designated 2010 as The Year of Engineering Leadership. This will mean many things to many people but the essence of it is that as a profession we do offer leadership internally to our members and externally to our wider community.

My focus is on the strength of the individual to understand their leadership capacity and potential. Each of us has the capability to offer leadership in our work, our home, our community and our world. Our profession has a proud tradition of providing leadership in all walks of life and this year offers us the opportunity to reflect on that proud history and to build on it for the future.

As the year progresses, you will hear me speaking of Values Driven Leadership and how a clear understanding of our values and our commitment to them leads to highly effective outcomes. Through Values Driven Leadership organisations produce people with a strong sense of belonging, a strong sense of identity and a strong sense of purpose. Engineers Australia, as an organisation that represents some 90,000 individuals, needs to ensure its sense of belonging, identity and purpose in all it does both within its membership and outwardly to the larger community.

There will be a number of specific activities organised throughout the year to promote key messages that include: the engineering team is a leader in providing sustainable solutions to society’s challenges; engineering is identified as an exciting and fulfilling career choice for persons who wish to become leaders of change; and our Institution fosters and develops engineering leaders throughout all stages of their career.

I encourage you to engage with the many initiatives already in train or that are planned for the coming year. Let’s develop a sense of belonging, a sense of identity and a sense of purpose in all we do next year.
