Key Objectives - College of Chemical Engineers

1. Public role and professional standing

  • The Australasian community of chemical engineers is cooperatively represented by the Australian and New Zealand Federation of Chemical Engineers (ANZFChE), of which the Chemical College is a member. The most significant achievement of the Federation is the annual Chemeca conference which was held in Newcastle in September 2008, themed Toward
    a Sustainable Australasia.
  • This year the Federation made 7 Awards of Excellence from 28 high quality nominations as well as awarding the Chemeca Medal. The college also awards the John A Brodie Medal. The awards will be presented at the next Chemeca conference.
  • Procedures are in place to monitor EA vacancies on Australian Standards committees to ensure these are filled by chemical engineers where appropriate.
  • The Board established a schedule to review all relevant public EA policies. The board is committed to maintaining a cycle of reviews of all public EA policies.

2. An inclusive professional team

  • Adopted a volunteer recognition program, retiring board members are presented with service certificates.
  • The board includes representatives from YEA and WIE and supports initiatives run at division level.

3. Youth appeal

  • Implemented improved procedures for monitoring the status of undergraduate course accreditation with the Australian Engineering Accreditation Centre.
  • Monitored the progress of two undergraduate program accreditations.
  • Provided input into EA’s Stage 1 competency review.

4. Chartered Status

  • Assistance with CPD audits given when requested.

5. Continuing professional development

  • State-based joint committees continue their work in delivering technical programs.
  • Established a monitoring system to ensure that every edition of EA magazine includes at least one article championed by the college.
  • Committed to develop a commercial CPD training module, but is struggling to resource the undertaking.
  • Improvement is required around the organisation of eminent speaker tours.
  • Annual Chemeca conference will be held in Perth in September 2009 with planning well underway for Adelaide 2010 and Sydney 2011.

6. International reach and influence

  • The ANZFChE continues to make a significant contribution to the work of the Asia Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineers (APChE).

7. Internal (member) communications

  • Some state based joint committees publish excellent local newsletters.
  • The College supports Chemical Engineering in Australia, a quarterly electronic newsletter published jointly with IChemE.

8. A capable organisation

  • Worked with EA’s conference organisation team to draft and issue a new tender contract for the Professional Conference Organiser for future Chemecas.
  • The Chemeca Handbook has also been reviewed this year. The objective of the handbook is to ensure that the annual conference is coordinated with the highest standards of prudential controls and that the successes of previous conferences can be incorporated into the standards for future conferences.
  • Work continues on a College Handbook to document the roles and responsibilities of office bearers and members.
  • Revised and implemented new Terms of Reference for the College’s National Committee for Fuels and Energy.
  • Meets twice each year.
