Key Objectives - College of Electrical Engineers

1. Public role and professional standing

  • Submissions were made to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) on: “Proposed Changes to the Radiocommunications Labelling (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Notice 2008” and to the Ministerial Council on Energy (MCE) on “Harmonisation of Energy Supply Industry Technical & Safety Regulation”.
  • A draft Issue Paper was prepared on the lack of Nuclear Engineering Tertiary Education and consequent lack of research in Australia on related essential issues. The draft paper is planned to be submitted to Congress at its Nov 2009 meeting.
  • The inaugural National Professional Electrical Engineer of the Year Award together with the M A Sargent Award were presented in Jun 2009 at the College’s annual Awards Dinner, this year in Brisbane.
  • Other awards presented this year were the Graduate Electrical Engineer of the Year Award and the Madsen Medal for the best technical paper in the Journal.
  • The College Board continues to have representatives on Standards Australia Electrical Standards Committees and seek feedback on outcomes.

2. An inclusive professional team

  • Technologists, Associates, WIE and YEA are represented on the College Board and are active in the Board’s work.
  • Division panels are increasingly organising joint technical lectures with other Division panels for wider member participation.
  • The College is continually encouraging young engineers to become Board members and/or participate in the Divisions’ Electrical Panel activities.

3. Youth appeal

  • Started to enhance the College website for youth appeal
  • The College again sponsored the Victorian Model Vehicle Solar Challenge, which is highly regarded at student level.

4. Chartered Status

  • The Board continues to review and assess special CPEng submissions referred to it by National Office.
  • The Board regularly reviews the national statistics of Electrical Chartered Engineers.
  • The Board reviewed and commented on the draft Stage 3 Technical Competencies.

5. Continuing professional development

  • Division Representatives regularly share and discuss their Division CPD activities and results with other members of the College Board e.g. Sydney Panel organised a very successful half day seminar on Hazardous Area Electrical Installations.
  • The College Board plans to have an Eminent Speaker every 2 years.
  • The College Board agreed that AJEEE should now aim to include 50% technical papers of an academic nature and 50% industry practice papers and presentations, to make the journal more useful as CPD for members.
  • It is hoped that future electronic launch of technical presentations at Divisions will enhance CPD delivery especially to regional engineers.

6. International reach and influence

  • All Division Panels have joint technical programs with the IET and IEEE.
  • IET and IEEE representatives are invited to one Board meeting each year, which allows joint initiatives to be planned and discussed.
  • This year’s Annual Awards Dinner was held jointly with QLD IET and IEEE.

7. Internal (member) communications

  • Chair provided information from the Chairs Meeting to College Board members.
  • Chairs of affiliated National Committees and Societies are invited to one College Board meeting each year for sharing information.
  • An informative article on the activities of the Electrical College was prepared for publishing in the Engineers Australia magazine.
  • The Electrical College part of the Engineers Australia website was reviewed and substantially  improved through updating, text editing and inclusion of downloading facilities to allow direct information retrieval for members.

8. A capable organisation

  • A succession plan is in place for the College Board’s Executive Committee.
  • Significant effort was made by the College Board to improve its internal policy framework and records.
  • The College Board has two face-to-face meetings per year and an additional Executive meeting. Other matters are dealt with by email.
  • College Board members show a high level of interest in National Congress initiatives.
