Key Objectives - College of Information, Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering Engineers

1. Public role and professional standing

  • Contributed feedback to the following Commonwealth government papers: Digital Economy Future Directions, Regulatory Reform for 21st Century Broadband and FTTP in Greenfield Estates.
  • IREE Neville Thiele Award guidelines were updated after a review.
  • The IREE Neville Thiele Award for 2008 was presented to Professor Alex Grant who has made important contributions to the mathematical theory of information transmission in wireless digital networks. Prof Grant is the Director of the Institute of Telecommunications and Research at the University of South Australia.
  • Work has commenced on the development of a new award.
  • There is ongoing participation in the nomination of representatives to Standards Australia Committees.

2. An inclusive professional team

  • Board members are active in the Divisions in leadership and committees.
  • The College continues to work closely with the Electrical College at Board and Division levels.
  • ITEE nominated board member Simon Finlayson has continued to act as Conference Liaison, developing guidelines and serving on the committees for ACOFT (optical fibres) and ASWEC (software engineering).

3. Youth appeal

  • Board members actively encourage interaction with, and the organisation of events for high school students.
  • In February Neville Thiele, Prof Alex Grant and some board members visited the Australian Science and Mathematics School in Adelaide.

4. Chartered Status

  • The board has begun a process to write Stage 2 Competencies for Software Engineering.

5. Continuing professional development

  • Dr David Skellern, CEO, NICTA is the inaugural ITEE College Eminent Speaker and presented a series of lectures on The Future of the Digital Economy in Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Townsville.
  • All Divisions have active CPD programs.
  • Monitor Magazine is published bi-monthly and is available on members’ zone of the Engineers Australia website.
  • ASWEC 2009 (Australian Software Engineering Conference) was held in April 2009 on the Gold Coast. As part of ASWEC, the college hosted a very successful Smart Minds event for engineering and information technology students.

6. International reach and influence

  • A board member was able to attend the WFEO conference in late 2008.

7. Internal (member) communications

  • Contributed to all reporting activities, across Divisions and with Boards with over-lapping interests. These included the NCSWE, ACS, IEEE and conference organising and steering committees.

8. A capable organisation

  • Reviewed and updated operational plan.
  • Two face-to-face meeting of Board were held during the year, plus teleconferences and email correspondences as needed.
  • Face-to-face meeting now coincide with major conferences or division activities where possible.
