Key Objectives - College of Structural Engineers

1. Public role and professional standing

  • The College has contributed well to policy development.
  • Communications with IStructE are progressing well with both organisations re-signing the MoU in August 2008 for another three years. Dr Peter Ho is the IStructE representative on the Board.
  • Brochures on the role of the structural engineer and retaining walls have been reprinted due to the high demand.
  • Awards are being managed well however continued effort is required to encourage nominations to be presented for consideration. Awards are reviewed and debated at every board meeting.

2. An inclusive professional team

  • We have had a steady increase in membership. This is being monitored. This appears to be driven by legislation in many jurisdictions. It is hoped that many of the undergraduate and student members do convert their membership to full membership in the future.

3. Youth appeal

  • Supporting structural engineering education in tertiary courses has stagnated. It is difficult to make a positive contribution with the TAFE system.

4. Chartered Status

  • Board members have been highly involved in the CPD audits and guideline amendments.

5. Continuing professional development

  • The college is planning on reviewing the recently adopted CPD guidelines for feedback by way of striving for ongoing improvement.
  • The board sees its journal as being both well delivered and received.
  • ASEC 2010 and CECAR5 will be jointly held in Sydney – August 2010. Members of SCB are actively involved in the organising committee. IStructE and IABSE again continue to contribute.
  • The Eminent Speaker Program – Prof Keith Crews (UTS) visited many national centres during 2009 on the topic of innovation in the use of timber.
  • Joint CPD activities with ASI are working well in most divisions. CIA provide complementary technical programs that are supported by EA. More work is required to enhance alliances.

6. International reach and influence

  • IStructE joint meetings are held regularly in Qld and NSW with representation on each other’s committees - excellent. IStructE presence in other states is developing and shall be enhanced with the re-signing of the existing MoU.

7. Internal (member) communications

  • Communications are working well, however need continued effort.

8. A capable organisation
