National Committee on Engineering Design (NCED)

1. Public role and professional standing

  • Continued distribution and promotion of the Committee’s Design Guidelines for our Planet & Us.
  • Provided comments and advice to the DEWR Safe Design guidelines.
  • Advice to BCME on sustainability within engineering design and engineering design education.
  • Efforts are being made to found an Australian Graduate School of Engineering Design.

3. Youth appeal

  • 2008 was the 21st year of the Warman Design-and-Build Competition. 14 universities from Australia & NZ participated in the 2008 National Final for 2nd year Mechanical Engineering students. Winners were from the University of Adelaide – Bryn Crawford, Shane Fitzgerald, Tristan Goss and Eric Parsonage. Continued sponsorship of Competition by Weir Minerals Australia Ltd (approx $35K per annum).

5. Continuing professional development

  • Facilitation of the half-day annual Engineering Design Education Forum for campus organisers – held as part of the Weir Warman National Final in Sep 2008. In a new initiative, one of the winners of Sydney Division Engineering Excellence Awards was included as one of the presenters.

6. International reach and influence

  • Participation in and contribution to the Conference of Heads of Mechanical Engineering, Auckland, November 2008.
  • The Weir Warman Competition continues to be supported by universities from New Zealand.

  • Webpages updated and maintained. 
  • Regular publication of articles and notices in the EA Magazine & e-News to keep members informed of the Committee’s activities.

  • Face-to-face meeting held Sep 2008 as part of the Weir Warman National Final activities.
