Key Objectives - Northern Division

1. Public role and professional standing

  • The Division continues to meet regularly with Ministers of the Crown on key issues that affect members. There is considerable member representation on key reference groups and advisory boards initiated by NT Government agencies and Ministers.
  • Northern Division has taken on the Secretariat for Built Environment Design Professionals (BEDP) and continues as Secretariat for the NT Business Council.
  • The Division highlighted the 90th Anniversary of Engineers Australia with a successful Gala Dinner with over 150 participants re-creating a model of an historical water tower from the RAAF Base (which had to hold water!)

  • Northern Division successfully themed the “Year of the Engineering Team” with major events including the Engineering Excellence Awards.
  • 2008 National Technologist of the Year was appointed as Deputy President for the Division in 2008-2009 and is set to become Division President in 2010.
  • 2009 Engineering Excellence Awards had a record number of entries for the Division.
  • The Heritage committee developed two Engineering brochures for visitors to the Top End which are constantly requested by tourism operators.

  • Northern Division has continued its intensive work with Charles Darwin University, being instrumental in securing funding for a Chair of Structural Engineering for the next four years, and successful in brokering 20 new scholarships through the Department of Infrastructure and Planning for the Co-op degrees.
  • Members collaborated with the University, and met with the accreditation panel to help achieve full accreditation for Engineering Degrees at Charles Darwin University.
  • An extra Science & Engineering Challenge was held in 2008-09 with two challenges being held – in both Alice Springs and Darwin.
  • An exciting addition to the range of youth programs introduced the SMART program into remote indigenous Arnhem Land communities.

4. Chartered Status

− Promoting the Professional Development Program towards Chartered Status for members

  • Charles Darwin University and Department of Infrastructure and Planning have become PDP Partners.
  • An agreement has been made with the National Assessor to include Co-op student placements as part of the PDP program.
  • There has been an increase in the number of members becoming Chartered.

5. Continuing professional development

− Conducting learned society events

− Improving access to CPD material for members

  • Inclusion of a number of eminent speaker tours this year has been beneficial to the Division.
  • Regional and remote members continue to be disadvantaged with regard to CPD; however there have been technical presentations in Alice Springs, Jabiru and Nhulunbuy.

6.International reach and
influence
  • Indonesian members are organising and conducting their own CPD events in Jakarta.

7. Internal (member) communications

− Keeping members informed

  • Newsletter has increased from 8 pages to 16 pages allowing reporting of increased activity within the Division.

8. A capable organisation

  • Sponsors continue to contribute significantly to our income stream to enable us to deliver programs.
