  • The Division developed the report “Technically Speaking, South Australia – confronting the challenges facing Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) education and promotion”. The report identified areas where South Australia is already performing well and opportunities for improvement in the future. The report was distributed to government and key stakeholders, with good feedback.
  • Contact was made with local politicians via a President’s Boardroom Lunch with Hon Pat Conlon Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Energy. A President’s Boardroom Breakfast was held with Martin Hamilton-Smith, (then) Leader of the Opposition.

  • A new group was established in the South Australia Division for overseas qualified members. The inaugural event received excellent feedback from attendees.
  • The Executive Director conducted a regional visit with the National President Julie Hammer and 2008 Division President Bill Filmer to Roxby Downs. Artur Sawadski also visited Roxby Downs and delivered a solar energy presentation for members in the region.

  • The Division continued to raise the profile of engineering with students, teachers and parents, gaining positive feedback for all events. Graduate members contributed to a Teacher’s night to provide information about careers in engineering.
  • The Science and Engineering Challenge again proved a popular competition with an extra day added to cater for the large number of registrations.
  • The Division conducted presentations for University and High School students.

4. Chartered Status

− Promoting the Professional Development Program towards Chartered Status for members

  • The Division newsletter promoted the PDP and Chartered Status with articles on several occasions.
  • Five successful Chartered workshops were held. Chartered Status was obtained by 39 members this year. The Division continued to recruit new interviewers for Chartered Status interviews. There are currently 421 Chartered members on the interview panel register.

− Improving access to CPD material for members

  • The Sir Eric Neal Address was held with over 170 attendees. The Governor of South Australia was the guest speaker, addressing the critical contribution of the engineering profession to the State’s future economic prosperity. Two Hall of Fame inductions were made at this event, and the Engineers Australia medal presented.
  • Our groups were busy with over 40 CPD seminars and visits conducted during the year. The Division began working the Civil representative to reinvigorate the Civil Branch in South Australia.

− Keeping members informed

  • The Division Newsletter design was updated, with positive feedback.
  • The Division continued the fortnightly email broadcast to ensure all members received up to date information regarding Division events and activities.
  • Staff monitored and regularly updated the website to guarantee that up to date information was always available.

  • A member planning day was held in October 2008. The event was well attended and all attendees provided valuable input. Positive feedback was provided by the facilitator.
  • A staff planning day provided the opportunity for staff to provide feedback and suggestions.
  • The Division Committee handbook was refined to include an induction process.
