Key Objectives - Tasmania Division

1. Public role and professional standing

− Engagement with Government

− Professional and industry links

− Promoting the profession

− Public celebration of achievements

− Regulatory framework

  • The Division focussed on the four key objectives in our “Engineer’s Vision for Tasmania”. Particular focus this year was on increasing the number of young Tasmanians developing careers in engineering. We continued our new schools program with 32 high-achieving Grade 10 students, to increase awareness of the opportunities in engineering for the students as well as careers advisors, teachers, principals and parents.
  • Our Engineering Excellence Awards for 2009 received near record numbers of entrants and registrations for the gala dinner in August were very high.
  • We have also been involved with the formation of a Tasmanian Professional Bodies Council.

2. An inclusive professional team

− Membership initiatives

− Encouraging member involvement

− Supporting non-metropolitan members

− Encouraging diverse member interests

  • Young Engineers and the Young Professions Network continue to be very active and achieve good member involvement in events such as Gen2X (Generation and gender exchange).
  • Women in Engineering have also been active with University lunches, school visits and member activities.

3. Youth appeal

− School outreach programs

−Engineering competitions

−Promoting engineering on campus

  • The Science and Engineering Challenge for high schools continues to be a great success with 5 days of heats statewide, followed by a state Super Challenge.
  • Two F1 (formula 1) in schools hubs have been established for schools in local areas in Northern Tasmania and discussions are continuing for a southern hub.
  • A number of technical meetings were held on university campuses in Hobart & Launceston.
  • Awards were also presented to final year students at UTas & Hobart & Burnie TAFEs

4. Chartered Status

− Promoting the Professional Development Program towards Chartered Status for members

  • This year saw the first visit to Tasmania of an Industry Manager who visited a number of PDP organisations and addressed member sessions on Chartered Status. Two series of Chartered Status Workshops and PDP company visits were undertaken in Hobart & Launceston.

5. Continuing professional development

− Conducting learned society events

− Improving access to CPD material for members

  • Invitations to 95 CPD events organised by Engineers Australia and related organisations were distributed to members during the year.
  • CELM activities are being re-invigorated and a good forward program has been established.
  • The Building & Construction Industry Training Board has for the first time provided funding for some of our CPD events. A number of successful EEA courses were run this year.

6.International reach and
influence

7. Internal (member) communications

− Keeping members informed

  • 10 issues of a our full colour Division newsletter (between 12 20 pages each) were produced, printed in-house and posted to members. Regular electronic updates are also sent to members.

8. A capable organisation

−Working with our sponsor partners

− Good management

  • The Division was involved in the Government’s planning processes for the new Royal Hobart Hospital in the adjacent railway yards. With the proposal now cancelled we will now engage in discussions with the Government regarding the purchase of the Royal Engineers Building.
  • The Division staff continues to be stable with no staff turnover in the past 22 years.
