  • In association with the RTSA, the Division submitted a response to the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Railway Skills Shortages. We participated on the Victorian Government’s Ministerial Advisory Council for Maths and Science, supported the Government’s Industry Expos for Migrant Engineers, including a regional expo in Ballarat, and participated in the launch in London of the State Government’s new online workbook to assist engineers seeking to live and work in Victoria.
  • Tim Pallas, Minister for Roads and Ports, provided an overview of the new Victorian Transport Plan at a Fellows Luncheon for over 300 Fellows and guests.
  • Antarctic explorer, Tim Jarvis delivered the Chapman Oration at a gala event of approximately 300 guests.
  • Australian Engineering Week focused on school students, teachers, parents and careers counsellors. 50 events were held across Victoria, promoting engineering careers.
  • The new Engineering Industry Week included over 50 events across the State. Over 200 attended the launch event, a special photo exhibition held in the State Library titled “The Changing Face of Melbourne”.

  • Achieved 5.1% membership growth with the highest number of Fellows and female members across Divisions.
  • Introduced an ‘on-boarding’ follow-up strategy for new members, and established new member interest groups for the North-East Region, for Senior Engineers, and the Emerging Leaders group. A successful Regional Groups Weekend was held in Wangaratta, and the YEA-V Regional Strategy completed.
  • Two Member Hot Topics Breakfasts over 250 attendees - Strategically managing the engineering skills shortage and The future of green transport.
  • Joint event with Swinburne TAFE for Associates and Technologists, over 60 attendees.

  • 20 Schools and nearly 150 engineers registered to participate in the Division’s enhanced schools program, with visits increased by almost 70%.
  • We established a Senior Engineer Mentors in schools program with the Victorian Education Department, and are developing programs with the Department’s new Science Centres, and initiated a new schools and industry partnership program.
  • 165 companies are listed in the Division’s 2009 Employment Handbook; over 5000 attended the Division’s 2009 Careers Expo supported by over 60 companies.
  • Inaugural Graduate Ball over 280 attendees.

4. Chartered Status

− Promoting the Professional Development Program towards Chartered Status for members

  • 65 Workshops and Information Sessions on Chartered Status were conducted.
  • We hosted 2 PDP Round Tables.
  • Victoria Division has 91 PDP companies and 1,300 participants.

5. Continuing professional development

− Conducting learned society events

− Improving access to CPD material for members

  • A new Board of Engineering meeting structure was introduced, and a new CPD promotion process in the newsletter and related reporting process to the Board.
  • Introduced a new online registration system for all Victorian events.
  • We initiated an upgrade of AV facilities in all meeting rooms in Bedford St.

− Keeping members informed

  • New reporting processes were introduced for Division Committee and Board of Engineering, including new CPD media report.
  • 4 EV newsletters, 6 Engage electronic newsletters and 10 What’s On CPD emails were delivered. Victoria Division changed over to the new national website.

8. A capable organisation

− Good management

  • Governance arrangements were strengthened, with a Governance Workshop for the Division Committee and Board of Engineering, new sustainability portfolios for Division Committee members, and new monthly Regional Group Chairs teleconference prior to each Division Committee meeting, and a strategic succession planning process commenced.
  • Staff training and performance reviews were undertaken for all staff.
