  • Engagement with State agencies included the release of joint WA Government/EA discussion paper on registration of engineers, input to government policy development on such as Water Pricing Management, and the Review of Science and Innovation Advisory Bodies, meetings with Ministers and Policy Advisors in areas of Transport, Science and Innovation and Heritage.
  • Participated in external committees, Chamber Commerce and Industry Innovation Working Party, Defence Industry Skills Unit Board, Safe System Project for transport.
  • Working cooperatively with associations including BEDP, CCI, MBA, ATSE, Scitech, EWB, Aust Steel Institute, and AICD.
  • Improved media coverage of events and increased requests for comment.
  • Engineering Week 2008 events were well attended, and our Engineering Excellence Awards maintained entry numbers and dinner attendance.
  • CELM National Conference and Young Engineers National Summit both successful.
  • Range of Award nominations – Honorary Fellow, Order of Australia, National Individual Awards, and international heritage.

  • Articles and profiles celebrated 2008 Year of the Engineering Team, and 2009 marks 100 years of the Institution of Engineers in WA.
  • Volunteer training was provided for Young Engineers, Division Committee, Panel and Branch Chairpersons. Certificate presentations continued to be well attended.
  • Membership reached 11,870, with 5.8% annual growth in qualified members.
  • 860 student engineers attended Careers Expo 2009, with 85 companies represented.
  • Regional groups increased activities this year, particularly in NW.

  • Engquest was well supported in WA; our Schools Program Coordinator remained busy with requests for engineers to visit schools.
  • Science and Engineering Challenge bigger in 2008. 59 high schools, 2000 year nine students.
  • Education Forum was held in July 2008. Student and parent information sessions were held in Australian Engineering Week.
  • We worked with Engineering Studies Course teachers, and launched a Teachers Award for excellence in teaching in engineering related subjects.

4. Chartered Status

− Promoting the Professional Development Program towards Chartered Status for members

  • Highest rate of PDP participation across the country – 18% increase this year.
  • Continued increase in level of interest in Chartered Status. 1600 people attended one of 64 presentations given, and an increase in CERs submitted.
  • Number of Chartered engineers is increasing.

5. Continuing professional development

− Conducting learned society events

− Improving access to CPD material for members

  • National CELM Conference and Young Engineers National Summit successfully delivered.
  • Other major events included SSEE national conference, AGS seminar, Sustainable Transport and Sustainable Cities seminars and CELM speaker series
  • Events held in association with kindred bodies including Steel Institute, IMechE, IET, IChemE, and AICD.
  • Increased the number of regional events. More than 10,000 attendees to CPD activities.

  • Several specific member group surveys were undertaken, with high response levels.
  • Substantial review and development of Division email, website and newsletter.
  • Volunteer training and information included Division Communications Strategy.

  • Division revenue continues to be greater than 40% of total.
  • Targeted staff training and consultation has improved capability and ownership.
  • New Division Committee structure and Division Advisory Board working efficiently.
