Australasian Particle Technology Society (APTS)

apts logoThe Australasian Particle Technology Society has had a vibrant year, with member activity spanning the industrial, research and academic arenas. The APTSoc Newsletter has provided members with a mix of professional information covering conference dates and venues through award announcements to examples of the importance and ubiquity of particulate materials in our daily lives.

Members have been heavily involved in local and international conferences related to different aspects of particle technology:

  • Chemeca 2008, Newcastle, Australia, September-October 2008
  • 4th International Symposium on Spray Dried Dairy Products, Melbourne, Australia, April 2009
  • 9th International Symposium on Agglomeration and 4th International Granulation Workshop, Sheffield, England, June 2009
  • 6th International Conference for Conveying and Handling Particulate Solids with 10th ICBMH, Brisbane, Australia, August 2009.

The annual Chemeca conference continues to be the focus of much APTS activity. At the 2008 Conference, the trend of previous years continued, with 30 papers presented in the particle processing theme.

The Graeme Jameson Award is our calendar highlight. It was sponsored this year by Xstrata Technology, with a prize of $5,000. This award is for the best paper at Chemeca by a postgraduate student in the area of particle technology. The winner was Timothy Hunter, for his paper “Behaviour of Aqueous Foam Stabilised by Nanosilica & Non-ionic Surfactant”. The highly commended runners up, Jamie Dickinson and J P O’Shea were presented with certificates.

The AGM was held on Tuesday 30 September. At this meeting a new office bearer election system was proposed and passed. Under this system, the office of President is for a two year term. At the end of the two years, the President retires, the Vice-President becomes the new President, and elections for a new Vice-President are held. This system is within the constitution of APTS and ensures preservation of corporate memory and develops new leadership.
