Our groups have all been active with Brisbane and Sydney being busy with their enhanced technical talks program. Membership continues to grow especially with many young engineers joining as reflected in our highest ever number of submissions for the David Sugden award, open only to young engineers.

There are currently several major projects in train:

  • Brisbane is still very active with the Clem Jones Tunnel into the final stages, the 5.25 km Airport Link under wayand the winning tender on the Northern Link due to be announced in October 2009.
  • Sydney has the Desalination Plant under construction and the short list for the Sydney Metro has been announced. The Metro West is also hovering in the wings with talk of at least two major freeway tunnels in the offing.
  • In Melbourne two major sewer projects are under construction, the Desalination Project has been awardedand funding gained from the Federal Government’sinfrastructure package towards the 17km long East-West Rail Tunnel.
  • The Adelaide Desalination project is starting up, and the Hobson Bay Sewer nearing completion in Auckland.
  • Many other rail and road tunnels are on the planning tables.

We are now circulating our Journal around the world as it reflects well our standing in the world forum. The web site is another means of communication that we are proud of and the increasing number of hits reflects its use to both members and the tunnelling industry at large.

The next Tunnelling Short Course is to be held in Sydney in late September 2009. We also have a high level of participation in the commercially organised 9th Tunnelling Conference to be held in Brisbane in October this year. The Australian Shotcrete Society is moving ahead on the planning for the conference to be held in Queenstown, New Zealand 15-17 March 2010.

In response to the high level of approval for our bid we have formed a 2014 Conferences Committee under the chairmanship of past ATS Chair Garry Ash and are making plans to upgrade our submission to the General Assembly of the International Tunnelling Association in Vancouver next year.
