Australian Composite Structures Society (ACS)
The Australian Composite Structures Society has now been in existence for almost 17 years and continues to provide for its members a high quality lecture program, together with support for relevant special events in the field.
Over the reporting period, there were 13 lecture meetings, five of which were held in Canberra and eight in Melbourne, and as usual the Annual General Meeting also took place in Melbourne prior to one of these in December 2008. Each of the lectures was of a high standard with the presenters coming from Australia, Denmark, France, Japan, New Zealand and USA.
Dr Viktor E Verijenko became President of the Society, Prof Israel Herszberg moved to the position of Vice-President – Immediate Past President and Prof Murray L Scott maintained his long-standing role as ACSS Director. The position of ACSS Administrator continued to be filled by Mrs Denise M Bennett, a staff member at the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures, which she has held since January 2007.
Dr Rikard B Heslehurst as Canberra Chapter Chairman reinvigorated activities in the Australian Capital Territory through joint lectures with the Australian Defence Force Academy’s new Advanced Composite Research Unit. After several years of strong support for the Society, Dr Henry C H Li stepped down as Melbourne Chapter Chairman and web administrator, and Dr Adrian Orifici took up both of these responsibilities.
The membership of the Society has stabilised over the past few years with the total remaining at close to 60 members; this number includes all categories of membership, i.e. Engineers Australia members (46), direct members (15). The financial position remained sound, as reported by Mr John S Heathcote – the Society’s long-standing Honorary Auditor.
The Society was not involved during the year with the organisation of any major events, as the two biennial conferences that it has supported for many years were not held in the reporting period – these are the International Conference on Composite Materials and the International Conference on Composite Structures.
Murray Scott continued to serve on the Executive Council of the International Committee on Composite Materials.
