The major event for ASBSH in 2009 was the combined CHoPS+ICBMH international conferences (www.chops2009. org.au) and the BULKEX Asia-Pacific Bulk Materials & Powder Handling Exhibition (www.bulkex.com.au). This combined event was organised jointly by the ASBSH, Informa Australia, IIR Conferences and the Australian Bulk Handing Review journal. Over 140 papers from 29 countries in 12 major tracks were presented at the CHoPS+ICBMH conference, covering all nano-particle, particle, powder and bulk material technologies (relevant to all industry sectors, such as agriculture, chemical, food, mining, minerals processing, pharmaceutical, ports and power). The Opening Address “Integrating Scientific and Industry Communities” was delivered by Prof Judy Raper, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) from the University of Wollongong. This set the theme for the entire conference and exhibition, all held under the one roof at the Brisbane Exhibition and Conference Centre on 3-7 August 2009.

During the CHoPS+ICBMH Gala Banquet on 5 August 2009, the ASBSH presented two special awards. The ASBSH Award was awarded to Mr Stephen Wiche from TUNRA Bulk Solids (Newcastle) for his outstanding contributions to bulk solids handling. The A W Roberts Award was presented jointly to Mr Matt Hunter from BlueScope Steel Ltd (Wollongong) and Dr Andrew Katterfeld from the University of Magdeburg (Germany) for their significant contributions to bulk solids handling technology.

The Society has continued its association with the journal Australian Bulk Handling Review. Representatives of Informa Australia attend the Society meetings that are held each year to discuss and plan relevant events for the future. This association and developing relationship has been quite productive and fruitful, such as:

  • the Dust Explosions Conference, which was held on 10-11 June 2009 in Penrith and which involved some large-scale demonstrations of actual dust explosions at TestSafe Australia; and
  • planning for the Australian Bulk Handling Awards to be held in Sydney at Doltone House on 12 November 2009.

These new activities are providing greater options and opportunities for the members of the Society.
