Industrial Engineering Society (IES) (Institute of Industrial Engineers)
Our AGM in Melbourne on 6 September 2008 provided the opportunity to mark the 50th year of IIE operations in Australia with a celebratory dinner. This was the theme of the special September, 2008 edition of our ‘New Engineer’ journal, with a memorable photo of the occasion forming the front cover.
2009 has been a productive year for the IIE to date. IIE is continuing to play its central role of promoting industrial engineering in Australia and its northern neighbours. We continue to attract membership from both local and overseas applicants – especially those who are keen to have the IIE play its critical role of assessing overseas industrial engineering qualifications and grading membership according to the high standards set by our national umbrella organisation, Engineers Australia.
2009 also saw the re-establishment of IIE within the South-East Asian region. In March 2009, the Board of IIE welcomed new Director Mr Chin Hak Wong of Singapore. Mr Wong brings great experience and expertise to the Board and will play a central role of representing the interests of our overseas industrial engineers – many of whom have either previously studied and graduated from Australian universities or from similar, high prestige institutions throughout South-East and Central Asia.
Our journal ‘New Engineer’ continues to be the main publication representing and promoting industrial engineering in Australia. The journal is a collaborative effort with a fellow technical society within Engineers Australia, the Manufacturing Society of Australia (ManSA). Our special September 2008 edition was exceptionally well received by many of its readers. All further editions are to feature on the IIE website as an online publication of the IIE and IES.
Current institute plans include the possible establishment of high quality training programs in industrial engineering throughout Australia in 2010 using a commercial organisation, allied to, but separate from the IIE. This body will take on the role of further developing graded education programs for people wishing to undertake initial, intermediate and/or advanced studies. Accreditation of the programs will be through the agency of the IES and Engineers Australia.
I look forward to continuing working with all members of the Institute in 2009-2010. Should you have any comments or suggestions, or would like to contribute further to the Institute in your own particular way, please do not hesitate to contact either your local State Director or myself.
Dr Damian Kennedy
