IPWEA is a professional organisation providing member services and advocacy for those involved in and delivering public works and engineering services to the community. It has an MoA with Engineers Australia to undertake the role of Technical Society for Local Government and Public Works Engineering.

Highlights 2008-2009 and planned events

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced at the June 2009 meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government that IPWEA was part of an $8m winning consortium to establish the Australian Centre of Excellence in Local Government. CEO Chris Champion continued as President of the International Federation of Municipal Engineering (IFME). His 3-year term concludes at the 16th World Congress on Municipal Engineering to be held in Melbourne in September 2009 with IPWEA’s own National Conference.

A study tour to the USA, UK and Finland including the 2008 American Public Works Association Congress was held in New Orleans.

A new Practice Note on Condition Assessment for Buildings was released. IPWEA’s National Asset Management Strategy (NAMS.AU)
Committee has continued to forge national and international leadership in infrastructure asset management. IPWEA policy is having success with SA, NSW and Queensland State Governments legislating for long term financial planning in local government.

Education initiatives

A national program for implementation of infrastructure asset management (AM). Some 225 Councils in Australia participate in the NAMS.PLUS program which provides a series of tools, templates, workshops and support forum for some 750 asset management practitioners.

Professional development was conducted in plant and vehicle management, and parks management forums held. IPWEA established a Graduate Certificate in Infrastructure Asset Management via distance education through the University of Tasmania.

Strategic

IPWEA has identified Climate Change as a key area where public works and local government engineers can make a significant contribution. A successful national conference on Responding to Sea Level Rise was convened in August 2008.

Operational

The IPWEA National Board meets twice each year and also uses teleconferences. IPWEA is improving its administrative systems in response to its continued rapid growth. IPWEA sits on the NPER Board.
