Mining Electrical And Mining Mechanical Engineering Society (MEMMES)
www.engineersaustralia.org.au/memmes
MEMMES had another successful year with the membership growing. Our monthly meetings were well attended, with our members providing a very high proportion of the attendees. Papers were well received and interesting over a wide range of topics.
July
Our combined Convention and Trade Exhibition was held in the Hunter Valley and was well attended. Our next convention will be in May 2010.
August and November
The Department of Primary Industries held their annual Mechanical and Electrical Safety Seminars at Homebush. This was attended by Harold Lonsdale and myself. Once again MEMMES were asked to chair a session and promote the Society.
October, March
A one-day seminar in Mooranbah in October and Wollongong on March were well attended.
April
MEMMES held the fourth Combined Electrical and Mechanical Engineers- in-Charge Meeting at Potters Tavern. Attendance of 130 from mines and support industries was an increase over previous years.
The National Safety Council of Australia asked MEMMES for representatives to help judge the Industry Innovative Awards.
Apprentice visit to TestSafe
MEMMES sponsored 4th Year Apprentices and Trainee Engineers to a day at the Londonderry Test station. This is the fourth year we have carried out this operation. Visits were from Newcastle, Wollongong and Lithgow.
Australian Standards
Representation on various Australian Standards committees is performed by our members.
Alert Weeks Achievement Award
There are four categories for this award:
- Safety
- Innovation
- Academic achievement
- Process/procedure to benefit the industry
Out of six entries covering all four categories, the winner was Kristopher Andrews from Bengalla Mine.
We are looking for another successful year and our membership is continuing to grow.
