Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA)

Now with over 1,200 members the RTSA has an active program centred on a simple theme, Accelerated Learning. RTSA has recognised that the Rail Industry is suffering from a shortage of skills within an environment of increased need for the delivery of rail projects.

Governments have recognised the significant benefit rail transport can bring in urban and in freight transport and all have universally shown their trust in the industry by providing for large capital works. In freight transport government owned infrastructure provides the facility to exploit Australia’s natural resources.

RTSA activities for 2008-2009 consisted of 50 technical meetings with approximately 3000 attendees, a major seminar on Metro Rail transport with 120 registrants and the CORE Conference in Perth with 900 registrants. A major focus of the Society has been on young engineers with the RTSA funding significant attendance at these events.

For 2009-2010 the RTSA will hold as many technical meetings in capital cities again, as well as conduct a STORE (Study Tour on Railway Engineering) to Asia. Again, young engineers will be assisted with their costs.

In preparation for CORE 2010 in Wellington New Zealand, the RTSA Executive and Organising Committee will be progressively communicating with its members, sponsors and supporters to ensure the Industry is served by RTSA’s biggest event on the two-yearly calendar.

Our ongoing theme, to improve participation by young engineers and to meet the growing skills need, RTSA will be conducting “Meet the Railway People” events, designed for university students, to find out exactly what a career in railways involves and how that career can be rewarding, fulfilling and interesting.
