2009 Conference

Our International Conference will be held this year on 23-24 November 2009 in Melbourne. With an expected audience of more than 400 attendees, the conference has been designed with an emphasis on engineers and scientists from both Australia and overseas, practising across Government, industry, community and academic sectors. The conference is planned to be executed as an environmentally sustainable event.

The Environmental Engineer journal

The format of the society journal, The Environmental Engineer, was refreshed, with a new colour cover, plus full colour printing throughout. The fresh new look has resulted in a lot of positive feedback to the Managing Editor, Raj Kurup, who initiated these improvements.

Website

A new SSEE website was developed, linked with the Engineers Australia website. Content is being added to enable the site to be fully launched before the end of 2009. Chapter Committee members are currently being trained to be able to update information on upcoming events and past events. The new site has features such as storage of Minutes from Board meetings, members only access to references and current electronic copies of journals, plus current articles of interest.

Technical Society Events

This year has seen a large number of technical seminars for members in a number of the chapters. This has been especially evident in Sydney, where there were only a small number of seminars in 2008, due to workload issues of volunteers, but 2009 has seen monthly events attracting up to 40 members.

However, recruiting new committee members, and succession planning to ensure that current chairs can step down after 1-2 years in the role, is proving to be a serious problem in some chapters. This reflects the level of SSEE Board initiatives for 2009-2010 include making members aware of the features of the new website, being active in organising regular technical sessions for members, and continuing to build the profile of the refreshed society journal, The Environmental Engineer.
